If you want to stream music and movies from your PC to your TV screen, you have a ton of options. You can use devices like the AppleTV or your XBox 360, or you can take an old computer and turn it into a media extender by installing MythTV, Windows Media Center, or TVersity Media Center.

TVersity does everything that any self-respecting DVR can do and then some. You can stream media from any computer to your TV, browse international TV channels, create custom programming guides, and even get your music and movies on mobile devices when you’re away.

TVersity Media Center takes a little time and patience to set up, and works best with supported mobile devices. But when it’s up and running, it’s one of the most fully featured media extenders I’ve seen. The app has all of the traditional features of a home media server, and can play back audio, video, and stream content from the Internet with ease. The software also works with your Nintendo Wii or your Xbox 360 to stream content to your TV, if the computer running TVersity isn’t connected to it directly.
